In response to this, Saul began to blink rapidly. At this juncture, Ryanna erupted into the room carrying a tray bearing coffee and biscuits.

‘I am soooo sorry for the delay,’ she sounded out of breath. ‘The kids started eating crayons as an experiment, and then I had to break up a fight. How are you two getting on?’

‘Saul has created a magnificent design,’ Dorothy beamed. ‘You must be very proud of him. We’re discussing the small changes I fancy making to the leisure complex. The main residence looks fantastic, assuming the stairs don’t open directly on to the front door. That’s terrible Feng Shui.’

‘No, no,’ the stairs are on a curve off-centre to the front, so there’s no chance of that.’ Ryanna oozed calm, like somebody who spent all day quelling children’s high spirits. As the other woman poured the coffee, Dorothy saw her exchanging glances with her husband.

She enjoyed watching the silent communication passing between the couple. ‘Seal the deal, Saul,’ Ryanna was saying with her eyes. It made Dorothy want to laugh aloud. Poor Saul. He was going to be in deep shit if he did not get a result, that much was clear.

Even if he had received payment from the Dohenys for the house design (which was unlikely, given that Anna would hold legal title to them if he had) the money must be long gone. Chances were, he had lived off it for the past year. Now he was in need of more income, and there was nothing quite like having a multimillionaire sitting across from you to get the financial juices flowing.

What was the worst that could happen if she told him about the dream? Simone had not been shocked. On the contrary, she insisted she and Charlie were fascinated by the story, and urged Dorothy to immediately inform them if she experienced any more unusual occurrences.

Perhaps Charlie is part Aborigine and has a penchant for the supernatural? I wish Simone would hurry up and send a few photos so I can test my theory. Does he have very dark hair and a very deep tan and brown eyes?

Dragging her thoughts away from the Australian outback, Dorothy pretended to sound more pensive and hesitant than she actually felt.

‘You know, Saul,’ she said slowly, ‘if we could agree the changes to the pool and garage, and a couple of small adjustments to the layout of the main house, I might be tempted to proceed with this design even though it is rather large for my current needs. As you correctly point out, I am a lottery winner. I might suddenly develop a large circle of acquaintances. I hear that can often happen when one unexpectedly becomes uber-rich.’

Inside her chest, the Space Ache began to hum in earnest. Stop messing about! You haven’t hummed in years so don’t start playing up now!

‘Saul will accommodate you in any way he can, Dorothy, you can be assured of that,’ Ryanna spoke the words firmly. ‘I’ll leave you to discuss the details.
